Craft Project

This two-color fleece hat with a pom-pom takes less than 1 hour to make!
I love fleece. It’s so cozy and warm and it comes in a zillion colors and patterns. Another GREAT thing about fleece is that the edges of the fabric don’t unravel. This makes working with fleece very easy.
Materials:
1 ¼ yards fleece each in two colors/patterns, one color will be the cuff of the hat, the second will be the main
part of the hat
Tape measure
Needle and thread (or use a sewing machine)
Scissors
Fabric pen or ball point pen
T-Square (optional)
Button or bead (optional)
Instructions:
1.) Cut a piece of fleece that’s 18” high and 23” long (or see chart for kids and teens sizes)
Note: Fleece has a ‘stretchy’ side and a side that’s not as stretchy, use the stretchy side as the width of the hat
2.) Using the first piece of fleece as a pattern, cut the same size piece out of the second color fleece
3.) Lay pieces flat on top of each other with the right side out
4.) Fold in half (18” sides touching) with the cuff fabric on the inside
5.) Sew a 1/2” wide seam along the edge, 6” long
6.) Just below the last stitch make a tiny cut in from the side
7.) Turn hat inside out
8.) Sew another ½” seam along the unsewn fleece stopping 3” from the top of the hat, trim seams
9.) At the top (where you haven’t sewn a seem) cut ¼” strips, vertical to the seem, this fringe will produce the pom-pom on top of the hat
10.) Cut a strip of fleece from the left-over cuff fabric (not fabric used in the hat) that’s 10” long and about as wide as the fringe you just cut in the hat, tie knots at each end
11.) Loosely gather the top of the hat, where the fringe is, and tightly tie the strip around the hat, this should make a fringed pom-pom
12.) Roll the bottom of the hat up two turns to make a cuff
13.) Optional: Sew a button or bead somewhere along the cuff to keep it from unfolding
